Micro Thin Slit Wire EDM for Complex Hardened Mold Profiles

ISO 14001:2015       ISO 9001:2015        IATF 16949:2016

Custom Wire-Cut EDM Machining Product Overview

Wire EDM (Wire-Cut Electrical Discharge Machining) is a non-contact thermal erosion process that uses a continuously traveling thin electrode wire to cut complex shapes in electrically conductive materials. It produces precise contours, sharp corners, tapers, and micro-details without mechanical force, making it ideal for pre-hardened steels, carbides, and exotic alloys.

Our Wire EDM includes submerged 4‑axis/5‑axis cutting, multi‑pass skim finishing, and micro‑wire capabilities, delivering burr‑free, stress‑free components with micron‑level accuracy. We offer fully integrated solutions from design to final inspection, certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and IATF 16949.

FAQs About Wire EDM

What is Wire EDM, and how does it work?

expand_less expand_more

A: Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is a precision machining process that uses a continuously moving thin wire (electrode) and controlled electrical sparks to cut complex shapes into electrically conductive materials. The sparks generate intense heat that melts and vaporizes microscopic particles of the workpiece, which are then flushed away by a dielectric fluid (deionized water). It is a non-contact process, meaning there is no mechanical force exerted on the part.

What about the surface finish?

expand_less expand_more

A: Surface finish is controlled by the number of "skim cuts." A standard rough cut may produce a finish of ~Ra 2.5 µm. Through multiple finishing passes, we can achieve surface finishes down to Ra 0.1-0.4 µm (4-16 µin) or better, suitable for many mold and critical component applications.

What level of precision and tolerance can you hold?

expand_less expand_more

A: Our standard high-precision wire EDMs can consistently hold tolerances of ±0.005 mm (±0.0002"). For critical features and with optimal process control, we can achieve tolerances as tight as ±0.001 mm (±0.00004"). Specific capabilities depend on part size, geometry, and material.

How thick can you cut?

expand_less expand_more

A: We can efficiently cut materials ranging from thin shims (0.1mm) to very thick blocks. Our standard machines are capable of cutting workpieces over 300 mm (12 inches) thick, with specific machines handling even greater heights. Performance in thick cuts is optimized by our submerged machining technology for stability.

What is the smallest wire you use, and what are the benefits?

expand_less expand_more

A: We utilize fine wires down to Ø0.02 mm (0.0008") for micro-EDM applications. Benefits include:

· Reduced Kerf: Creates narrower cuts, minimizing material waste and allowing tighter radii.

· Micro-Features: Enables the machining of extremely small holes, slots, and intricate details.

· Lower Cutting Force: Ideal for delicate and fragile components.

What are the key advantages of Wire EDM over traditional machining?

expand_less expand_more

A: Key advantages include:

· Machines Hardened Materials: Can cut pre-hardened materials, eliminating distortion from post-heat treatment.

· High Precision & Complexity: Achieves extremely tight tolerances and intricate geometries with sharp corners.

· No Mechanical Stress: As a non-contact process, it produces parts free from burrs and mechanical stress.

· Excellent Surface Finish: Capable of producing very fine surface finishes without additional polishing.
